The wonders of Dadra & Nagar Haveli

Wednesday, 10 June 2015

On one of our unplanned trips we hit the road as an escape for the weekend. Silvassa is where my family made an impulsive decision to head towards. Without a map we set off on a journey: mom, dad, brother and I. Embracing the sight of beautiful landscapes and wide roads, the sign boards led us to our destination. After long hours of travel we reached the city of Silvassa. Little did we know, it was the beginning of an extraordinary tour.

Bustling with traffic and pollution spread all over the place. We looked at each other and nodded in the same frequency. This was definitely not where we expected to be. Pleasant climate, nature trails and silence is we had anticipated. After asking a few localites for guidance, we landed to a museum. To support tourism, the Government initiated the center with all tour leaflets and maps available. Just the right thing we needed.

We walked around the museum, soaking in the culture and lifestyle of the tribals. Gazing at the map, we promptly decided to drive towards the surrounding areas. Escaping from the heat we drove towards the south of Dadra & Nagar Haveli. Passing through tribal villages and tunnel of trees. Few stops here and there and we found our place to stay, The Khanvel resort. What else one can ask for besides a clean room, a pool and Resto-bar. What a relief! Hungry as ever, we had a sumptuous meal and lazed around till early evening.

Curiosity sparked off after the nap and we began to explore the place once again. Strolling down the lane acting like ecologists. After a ten minutes walk down the lane we found a mystical butterfly garden. Open to all without a fee. The only rule you must follow: be silent.

Lush trees spread across the vast land. Butterflies of different varieties taking flight all over the place. Dreamy and mesmerized, we walked in silence along the pathway. The boards describe the species of butterflies in specific areas. Stay still to see them suck the nectar from flowers.

Towards the other side, a tree house awaits us. We also spotted uncommon birds, insects and the most fascinating of them were fruit bats. Climbing on the top to get a panoramic view of the enchanting forest was breath-taking.

Who knew that few hours away from Mumbai and Gujrat, lays a marvellous union territory that is not so much talked about. Dadra & Nagar Haveli with all its magnificence takes you for a surprise with its wildlife, streaming rivers, soothing waterfronts and well maintained flourishing gardens.

Comprising over 62% of the population, the tribals dominate a large portion of Dadra & Nagar Haveli. Simple, shy by nature and extremely humble, the tribals welcome you to their land. Visiting their village to have a meal or perhaps join them in a dance during festivals truly enhances the experience. The next day, we headed towards Dhudni, around 20 kilometers away from Khandvel. Enveloped by Mother Nature and developed into a tourist spot.

Staying at the Neertal tourist complex is a must. Beautiful cottages facing the lake and a backyard garden. Neat and clean rooms that also have an AC. The Madhuban dam on the Damanganga river has created several water bodies. A 30 minutes long boat ride takes you right in the middle of the river.

Watching the Western Ghats touching the river bank against the backdrop of the blue sky is stunning. The serenity one can experience here is like nowhere else. On the other side of the river is Kauncha, a secluded island with private cottages. Apart from yoga and ayurvedic treatments, the Himai Van Health Resort in Kauncha organizes treks and star gazing trips.

Listen to drops of water trickling down as the oar as it goes back and forth into the water. Our boat man tells us his story of how he is a graduate but prefers boating and farming to earn his livelihood. One has to either travel to Mumbai or Gujarat for a better job and due to the traveling and stay they are hardly able to save much. So being there and carrying on the family’s profession is a better option for them.

We listened to his stories and we lay down, resting our backs on cushions. Time swayed just like the water and soon we reached back. A friendly goodbye and tip that brightened his face, we moved on with loads of memories.

It was late afternoon and our empty stomach couldn’t wait any longer. A shack offering veg thalis caught our eye. Made up of sticks and mud, this local restaurant looked different. We sat as the girl laid out our plates and a salad bowl. The best part is that you pay a single amount and eat still you’re full. The food was so tasty that we relished every bite. In a happy mood we reached back to out hotel.

The night was cold and lights were dim. After a sumptuous dinner in a nearby hotel, we walked towards our hotel in the mist. Above us was a sky full of stars beyond our imagination. We gazed for quite some time and pointed out to the constellations. Someone was playing a flute nearby; the music was in perfect harmony to what we were experiencing. Like a lullaby, it slowly put us to sleep as soon as we reached our hotel room.

The next day we woke up to the sound of the chirping birds. Dadra & Nagar Haveli gave us more than what we expected. Surprisingly not many know of this place and the wonders it awaits.  Dadra & Nagar Haveli calls for adventure seekers, nature lovers and those looking out for solitude. A perfect getaway from the bustling city life.
It was time to leave with a promise to come back.

Across the river: Vajreshwari

Friday, 8 May 2015

Little sparrows lead their way through the fields. The winding pathway takes us on a bumpy ride as we head towards the Farmhouse.

Hues of tender orange marigolds blossoming on either side of the road, subtly merges with the green grass.

As we cross the bridge, the sound of water gushing beneath gets louder. The harsh sun continues to dry up the trees slowly.

Just few moments ahead and we spot the long awaited sign board, “Sutarpada”. With its edges chipped off, hanging on a slant, it makes me wonder why someone would decide to tamper a harmless signboard.

The uneven tar road smoothly joins into the muddy village pathway. Lost in the middle of 5 acres, we’ve reached our destination, the farmhouse. Enclosed by fields and faded mountains in the backdrop.

The next half an hour goes in setting up the house, especially the kitchen. Floors are swept; chaipais are brought out in the veranda. Meanwhile, dad and brother play country music on the guitar to get into the mood.

Organic vegetables are freshly plucked, put into a basket to be cooked into a traditional dish. I can feel the warm breeze while I watch the trees swaying with the blowing wind. In between the fence, I see the locals passing by.

What got my attention was watching them cleaning and stacking white onions. The pungent aroma of the onions begins to disperse all over the place.

As I sit back and relax in the midst of silence, listening to different species of birds chirping and leaves rustling with the wind. Mountains at a distance seem faded yet beautiful under the blue sky.

Later in the evening as it gets pleasant, we decide to take a dip into the famous Tansa River. Glittering waves splash on the rocks, dispersing into diamond like sparkles. Diverse ethnics of people descend into the natures pond, drowning away their stress and worldly tensions.

Intervening into the river, local horses gallop their way to quench their thirst. The cool water sucks away all the heat, instantly refreshing anyone who submerges themselves inside. There comes a time when you cannot feel the scorching sun anymore.

Kids in a joyful mood, splashing water on each other. Most of them come here for a swim, while, the rest just laze around the riverbed. One thing in common everyone’s faces, their smile.

The flowing green water changes colour as the sun hides itself behind the mountains. Out comes the moon, bestowing its light upon us. Watching its reflection in the water takes me into a deep trance. The sight is mesmerizing.

Vajreshwari is not only popular for its natural beauty but also the culture of the people around.  Miles away, just across the river, somewhere in the middle of nowhere,  you find peace and tranquility.

Opting for a long drive by road is a better option as you can capture magical glimpses of natures beauty. You can stay at a resort and enjoy their facilities and guided tours they offer. Drive around the town or sleep on the grass surrounded by mountains. You can reach here by train or road as per your convenience. Gorge on the local street food or trek around the place. Igatpuri is tiny village with friendly localites who are always happy to help. Undoubtedly it is beautiful throughout the year, but monsoons and winters are the best time to visit. The Waterfalls here are so beautiful that you'd want to stay all day long. Peace fills around you as hear little birds chirp while the sun slowly fades behind the green mountains.

The most talked about beach in Mumbai

Thursday, 12 June 2014

Its hard to imagine that admist the hustle and bustle of a busy city like Mumbai, one can still find such a beautiful beach. Be it summer, winter, spring or monsoons, this land of sun and sand has a huge number of visitors throughout the year. Each time you visit, It seems like a new day and a different place as the colours of the sky keeps changing in different hues and tones. A lot of memories have been created here. I too remember my childhood being spent there on holidays.

Back in the olden days it was much different. The beach was secluded with few shops here and there. It was also a famous spot for film shoots. One can also spot several celebrities now and then. Later as people got to know about the beach, the crowd started to fill in. Soon the beach lost its charm and within a few years it was filled with litter and stinks. Something had to be done. With the coming of the Clean Mumbai campaign and various other campaigns, the beach was restored again. A lot of changes and rules have been made since then, which included shifting the shops to end of the beach.

At day time, its all about the Sun rays reflecting on the glittering waves. In the evenings, its about the mesmerizing sunset. At night, its the cool breeze as people gorge on food from the stalls, engage in fortune tellers and watch colourful lasers lights spinning into the air. To grab your attention, hawkers spin light emitting toys into the air against the dark sky.

Juhu beach is a foodies paradise with local delicacies avaiable at affordable rates. You must try the special Falooda and Butter Pav Bhaji, something that Juhu was always famous for. Shop no. 58 is one of the oldest shops and has been there since 1965. The owner welcomes you with the name ‘Badhri’, commonly used for Badhrinath, another name of Lord Vishnu. When asked about the beach, he smiled and said, ” Even if its raining , you will still find the beach crowed. At 12 am the water reaches the shops but that doesn’t shop us from selling. This is what makes it unique from all the other beaches in Mumbai. People just love being here, no matter what".

The best way to enjoy this place is to sit back and relax. It also gets interesting when you interact with the people around. Being here is truly amazing, an experience you surely don’t want to miss.
